Enter the park at Reef Dr.; parking costs $15 Make sure you visit during a good low tide (i.e. lower than a 0.0 ft. tide; use http://www.saltwatertides.com/ and choose “Newport Bay Entrance, Corona del Mar” location to determine tides), during daylight hours, and be on site at least an hour before the actual low tide to give you enough time to complete the assignment before the tide starts to rise again. Assignment: Visit the park and take one photograph of you at the park, and attach this photo to your photo write up. Your photo write up needs to include a total of three intertidal organism (seaweed or invertebrate) photos. Next to each photo write 1) the kingdom and phylum that the organism belongs to, 2) the intertidal zone that it was found living in (low, middle, or high), and 3) two adaptations that it has to survive in this particular zone within the intertidal community.
Please give a $5 donation to the center. Assignment: Visit the center and take one photograph of you at the center, and attach this photo to your photo write up. Your photo write up needs to state the 1) the mission statement of PMMC, 2) a description of why marine mammals are at PMMC, 3) how PMMC cares for the animals (i.e. steps to recovery), 4) the three criteria that are used by PMMC to determine when an animal is ready to be released, 5) one photo of a sea lion with the characteristics that you used to help you determine that it was a sea lion, and 6) one photo of a seal with the characteristics that you used to help you determine that it was a seal.
Witness a Grunion Run:
Assignment: Attend a grunion run event and take two photographs of you witnessing the grunion run, and attach these photos to your photo write up. Your photo write up needs to include a close up photo of a grunion with a general description of its physical characteristics (size, color, shape, etc.) and where they are found on our planet and a photo of the grunion running with a description of why and when grunion run. NOTE: Check the following website for times and locations of grunion runs. Grunion run late at night and these times do not guarantee that you will witness a run. Visit Cabrillo Aquarium: http://www.cabrilloaq.org/ Assignment: Visit the aquarium and take one photograph of you at the aquarium, and attach these photos to your photo write up. Your photo write up needs to include a photo of three different displays/sections of the aquarium. Next to each photo, write a brief summary of what each display is showing, and state two interesting facts that you learned from each display.
