Marine Biology Extra Credit
Marine Biology students can earn a max of 10 points extra credit. Each of the options listed below are worth 10 points each.
Visit Crystal Cove State Park intertidal community:http://www.crystalcovestatepark.com/
Enter the park at Reef Dr.; parking costs $15
Make sure you visit during a good low tide (i.e. lower than a 0.0 ft. tide; use http://www.saltwatertides.com/ and choose “Newport Bay Entrance, Corona del Mar” location to determine tides), during daylight hours, and be on site at least an hour before the actual low tide to give you enough time to complete the assignment before the tide starts to rise again.
Assignment: Visit the park and take one photograph of you at the park, and attach this photo to your photo write up. Your photo write up needs to include a total of three intertidal organism (seaweed or invertebrate) photos. Next to each photo write 1) the kingdom and phylum that the organism belongs to, 2) the intertidal zone that it was found living in (low, middle, or high), and 3) two adaptations that it has to survive in this particular zone within the intertidal community.
